Patent numbeer dating
When an application filed after this date is granted, it is not given a new six-digit grant number.
Instead, the grant number is the same as the application number, but has a different kind code.
If something is marked "Patent Pending" you can reasonably assume it was made within a year or two of the patent being issued.
Remember that there could have been a year or more between the date of application and the final date of issue.

The number for each year is the first design patent issued that year. Design patents refer to any new ornamental design for an item.
The following table displays the calendar year along with the first corresponding document number issued in each year for selected patent document types (utility, design, plant, and reissue patents and statutory invention registrations) (*) The current patent numbering system began with a patent issued on July 13, 1836.
Prior to that date, an estimated 9,957 patents had been issued.
